Lesson 1 of 2

SHORTCUT

India's national symbols

Ten symbols, one myth to avoid.

The question

What are India's national animal, bird and flower?

The trick

Group them by kind — animals, plants, and the rest — instead of learning ten unrelated items in a row.

Worked example

  1. 1Animals: Bengal Tiger (national animal), Indian Peacock (bird), River Dolphin (aquatic animal), Indian Elephant (heritage animal)
  2. 2Plants: Lotus (flower), Banyan (tree), Mango (fruit)
  3. 3The rest: Ganga (river), 'Jana Gana Mana' (anthem), 'Vande Mataram' (national song)

So: Bengal Tiger, Indian Peacock, Lotus

Remember it like this

Every national symbol is something you could see on a walk by the Ganga: a tiger in the forest, a peacock on the bank, a lotus in the water, a banyan overhead.

In the exam

India has **no** declared national game. Hockey is widely assumed to be it, and the government has confirmed no national game has ever been officially declared. Examiners love this one — the answer is 'none'.

Why it works

Sorting items into a few named buckets means you only have to recall three or four things per bucket, which is comfortably inside what short-term memory holds.
