Lesson 2 of 2

SHORTCUT

Firsts in India

Group the firsts by field instead of memorising a scattered list.

The question

Who was the first President of India?

The trick

Sort the firsts into buckets — government, space, awards — and learn one bucket at a time.

Worked example

  1. 1Government: first President Dr Rajendra Prasad; first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru
  2. 2Women: first woman PM Indira Gandhi; first woman President Pratibha Patil; first woman IPS officer Kiran Bedi
  3. 3Space: first Indian in space Rakesh Sharma (1984); first woman of Indian origin in space Kalpana Chawla
  4. 4Awards: first Indian Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore (1913, Literature)

So: Dr Rajendra Prasad

Remember it like this

Prasad was President and Prime was Nehru — the two P's, President Prasad, sit together.

In the exam

Read whether the question says 'first Indian' or 'first woman' — the answers differ and the wording is where marks are lost. Rakesh Sharma was the first Indian in space; Kalpana Chawla was of Indian origin but a US citizen at the time.

Why it works

'Firsts' questions are asked by category, so storing them by category matches how they will be retrieved. Matching storage to retrieval is what makes recall fast.
