Lesson 5 of 5

SHORTCUT

The mysterious ने

Past tense, and the verb agrees with the object instead of the subject.

The question

Why is it and not ?

The trick

In the simple past with a transitive verb, add after the subject — and from that moment the verb stops agreeing with the subject and starts agreeing with the object.

Worked example

  1. 1is feminine, so
  2. 2is masculine, so
  3. 3— no object, so no , and the verb agrees with

So: Because with the verb agrees with , which is feminine

Remember it like this

hands the steering wheel to the object. Subject sits in the back seat and stops deciding anything.

In the exam

Two things kill marks here. First, only appears with transitive verbs in the past — never with , or . Second, once is there, look at the object to choose the verb ending. This is a favourite question at Madhyama level and above.

Why it works

This is called the ergative construction, and Hindi is one of the few Indian languages that has it. Once appears, the subject is grammatically 'set aside' and the object takes over the agreement.
